Task Manager
CRETE VALLEY aims to create a Renewable Energy Valley 'Living Lab' (REV-Lab) in Crete. It is envisioned as a decentralised renewable energy system that combines leading-edge ICT technologies, interoperable and open digital solutions (including data sovereignty), social innovation processes, and sound business models that are easy to adopt. CRETE VALLEY will demonstrate a digitalised, distributed, renewable, low carbon landscape that is affordable for all and fully covers the local energy needs on an annual basis, utilizing multiple renewable energy carriers and leveraging energy storage technologies. The REV-Lab will integrate four Community Energy Labs (CELs) located in distinct sites across CRETE VALLEY, conceived as Innovation Hubs.
An integrated social, technological & business approach will be deployed, providing: A Social Science Framework for REV-Labs & CELs, innovative multi-level governance models & social-driven mechanisms for involving citizens in the co-design, implementation and exploitation of RES; AI-based market segmentation algorithms, MCDA methods and consensus analysis for REV configuration; Interactive tools for REV planning (REV Readiness Assessment & computation, Augmented Reality applications, decision support tool); Energy Data Space compliant digital backbone for consumer and REV-level data-driven activation; P2P DLT/Blockchain digital marketplace for tokenised energy and non-energy assets valuation and reciprocal compensation; Data-driven operational analysis, advanced AI/ML tools and flexibility modelling services for optimal operation & resilience of the local energy grid; System-of-system Dig. Twin for multiple carrier grid management & operation; Data-driven services and apps for energy efficiency and activation performance management towards energy autonomy; Enabling RES technologies to increase the power production; REV Business Sandbox and blueprints for REV-Lab setup, upscaling and replication (including 4 Follower Communities).

ESTIRPE, a Spanish term meaning lineage, places the sense of community at the heart of the energy transition, fostering Energy Communities (ECs) empowerment through active participation, shared decision-making and inclusive innovation. ESTIRPE aims to boost ECs integration into the European (EU) grids, by enhancing renewable energy sharing, promoting the use of flexibility and enabling local energy trading and grid services. All this will be achieved by developing innovative AI-based and open-source solutions, tailored to the diverse needs of ECs. Through its transformative vision, ESTIRPE will connect citizens, ECs, DSOs, and aggregators within a shared EU framework, transforming fragmented local efforts into a cohesive and participatory energy network. The project is piloted in four main demonstrators (Spain, Italy, Greece, and the Netherlands) each representing a unique blend of climate, cultural, political, financial, and technical conditions across EU. Despite the growing recognition of ECs as key enablers of EU’s clean energy transition, their expansion remains uneven and constrained by a combination of regulatory, financial, technical, and social barriers. ECs still constitute a relatively new concept at EU and national level, and thus transposition processes continue to present difficulties. ESTIRPE project tackles these limitations by fostering digital interoperability, open governance and equitable data access, which empowers local actors to participate actively in the energy market, promoting citizen-led, resilient, and inclusive energy ecosystems. By deploying a Plug and Play Cooperation Platform that integrates P2P trading mechanisms and a Federated Data Space together with a set of open-source and AI-driven Digital Twins of the ECs and pilot sites grids, ESTIRPE enables transparent information sharing, secure data exchange and and coordinated cross-sector operational planning.
